Giant Kale Types - Description: around 25% leaf and 75% stem, with leaf mainly on top of plant. Stem is big and wide but there is a variation in the marrow in the stem which can create an unpalatable lower stem taste.
Normal yield 13 - 14 t/kg/dm.
Sowing rate: 4 - 6 kg/Hectare( higher rate for thinner stem)
All seed can be treated for protection against insects i.e. springtail.
Intermediate Kale Types - Description: around 30 - 35 % leaf and 65- 70% stem. More leaf down the trunk of the stem compared to giant types. Has smaller stem width than giant type, which enables stem to be eaten at the base. Variation in stem size and quality is minor.
Normal yield around 12 - 13 t/kg/dm.
Sowing rate : 5kgs/hectare
All seed can be treated for protection against insects i.e. springtail.

Kale Comments - Repeat cropping of kale is not recommended as club root disease has increased over recent years. There are kales which are available, that have low levels of (SMCO) which prevent Redwater when kale bolts to seed.
In harder soil types with lower yields giant types of kale are recommended for better results
Kale responds very well too nitrogen application from seedling stage onwards.
For highest yields use Bio Coated kale.
