Swede types - We have 5 main types of swede

1) Yellow flesh palatable i.e. similar to the Doon major

2) Yellow flesh DM, concentrating on higher DM yields

3) Resistant swedes for weed control

4) Pelleted seed for precision drilled for high yields, often 16- 18 t/kg/DM

5) Bio Pelleted Seed for maximum fertilizer efficiency, highest yields and quality.

Swedes main advantage is that it is a cost effective crop, that can handle wetter conditions.

Swedes main drawback is their Disease susceptibility is high especially second cropping.

Normal yields are around 11- 14 t/kg/dm.

All seed can be treated for protection against springtail and protection from diseases like damping off disease.

Swede Comments - Disease control amongst varieties, mainly dry root and club root differ widely so it is very important to choose wisely. Swedes recommended for first crop only as disease resistant varieties are not good enough against full disease breakout.

If you know wild turnip will infest your preferred paddock there are two choices you can make either plant fodder beet or HT swede.
